BAMcinemaFest presents the most dynamic and entertaining new films from cinema's brightest up-and-coming talents, plus special repertory screenings, live music, outdoor screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and more. Launched in 2009 as a showcase for new independent films, the annual festival is an extension of the year-round BAMcinématek film program, collecting the most innovative new work from festivals in the US and around the world and bringing the m to New York City audiences. This project was appointed to us to design a mobile application specifically for their annual Cinema Fest. After conducting some research they have found a large number of their viewers are Android users, so they have decided to lead with an Android application.
Though currently a relatively small festival, they have ambitious plans for it to increase in scale over the next few years. They want this app and its iterations to aid in the promotion of the event, foster BAM’s image of creativity and innovation, and create a product that streamlines the exploration, selection, purchase, and check-in process.
To kick off this project, we had a media scan to fully understand what other film fests' are out there with their exclusive applications, and focused on what can be learnt. I found out that the applications of Tribecca Film Festivals, Sundance Film festival, New York Film Festival, and Chicago Internatial Film festiva are providing similar services as BAM requested. After walking through all of them several times, I summarized those good traits as well as problems that should be avoid while designing the BAM application.
Based on some of the requirements above, the internal team has worked out the following two stories to take into the design phase.
After fully understand the requirements and looked into the in-depth journey that covers the user story, we tried laying out all those features in sort of structure in different ways, and finally carried a very sensible this high-level IA, which might work in the further steps.
We mapped out the user flow based on the stories provided, to find out the specific touchpoints that user would interact with, in order to figure out what could be improved upon those key requirements:
This would guild the wireframe stage for each step faithfully represents a specific key screen or section that needs to be flashed out visually.
having decided the flows, I was able to wireframe each page , trying to put everything together, as well as exploring interactions between each page.
We stay truthful to BAM's current brand identity, mainly from the website. Although this year's theme color is purple, this project aims for next year's fest, so we want to keep the app aligned with the website first, probably will change to next year's color.
